For four decades, the Kaiser Steel Mill was the biggest employer in the Inland Empire and, at its peak, the largest steel mill west of the Mississippi. When it shut down, the site was reborn as Auto Club Speedway — the old mill's 100-foot water tower preserved over the track as a nod to what came before.
